It’s time to celebrate your yearly anniversary of being born and you probably are wondering what to do. My ideal birthday is spending quality time with my friends and family. I’ve held large dinners at restaurants and I noticed I couldn’t speak to half of my guest due to the table size. I’ve had birthdays at local bars, which was fun, but it’s a constant fight over who buys you the next drink and you end up being drunk a little too fast. I’ve gone to birthdays at clubs with bottle service, but the obvious loud music is hard to really have a conversation. With that said, my ideal birthday must give me the opportunity to engage with my entire party and for my guest to have the opportunity to really meet each other.
- Renting a Weekend Getaway House
For one of my best friends 25th birthday, I organized and rented out a house in South Lake Tahoe. It wasn’t an ordinary house either. We had an N64 with Mario Kart hooked up to a projector in the theater room, pool table, jacuzzi, indoor pool, sauna, steam room, multiple fireplaces, 8 bedrooms, beer pong tables, and had designated “chefs” to cook 3 meals per day. Needless to say, it’s a trip that’s still talked about today.
Tip: For larger parties, I recommend booking in South Lake Tahoe instead of North Lake Tahoe. I typically use Homeaway, VRBO, or Airbnb for house hunting.
- Experience Wine Country in Style
I’ve organized 5 wine country birthdays so far, including my own. I highly recommend renting out a limo and booking it for at least 8 hours. Make sure to ask for complimentary champagne, but it’s a good idea to bring a few extra bottles depending on your party size. I also recommend buying some raspberries and a few bottles of orange juice to make mimosas in the car, they make for awesome Instagram pictures if you know what I mean. Also, choose Napa or Sonoma wisely. The perfect itinerary is two wineries and lunch in between. I’ve attempted three wineries on my birthday, but my friends were so wasted they don’t remember the third one. Lastly, choose wineries based on a geographic density too, wine country is huge and you don’t want to waste an hour driving from one winery to another. If you have any questions, shoot me an email!
- Traveling to (insert location)
I hope I conveyed this enough in my previous blog post, but it really doesn’t matter where the destination is. For this example, I like to bring up my friends Vegas Birthday. We ended up getting a huge suite to accommodate our group, which I highly recommend. That means we literally spent all of our time with each other. I was able to actually meet new friends and have more than just ordinary conversations. Everyone had the opportunity to grab multiple meals together, party in various clubs, and just simply enjoyed each other’s company.
- Local Barbeque
This is something that takes a little less planning and gets the job done. I recently attended my foodie friend’s barbeque and thought it was amazing. It was so well planned that every guest left 5 pounds heavier, drunk and sunburned. It really allowed her to catch up with all her friends and it also gave the opportunity for all her friends to meet. At the end of the day, it’s hard to go wrong with amazing food, booze, sun, and great company.
- Cruising on a Yacht
Yeah, you heard that right. But wait, not just the 1%ers in the world can enjoy something like this. You can either rent something privately or buy tickets to public events held by companies like Hornblower Cruises. You really cannot go wrong with either choice. Just imagine a 3-hour cruise around the bay, sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge, enjoying a lovely dinner onboard, and sipping on a cocktail with the San Francisco skyline behind you. I can guarantee your party will remember this one. Depending on which option you choose, it can run you anywhere from ~$50-$200 pp.
That’s my top suggestions for now! I can’t recommend something I’ve never done, so I’m looking forward to experiencing new ideas. Looks like I have a friend renting a house boat sometime in the future, I’ll keep you all posted!
